Social Connections

role

UX Designer/ UX Researcher

User Research, Wireframing, Visual Design, Prototyping

October 2022 – December 2022

Overview

In the fall semester of 2022 I was enrolled in a course at Michigan State called Interaction Design. Our final project was to work in teams of four. We were tasked with creating an experience for the MSU Museum in their new “Science on a Sphere” room. Our users would be middle schoolers, so we had to think of a lesson to teach for that age group. I worked with three other classmates, Mia, Kelly, and Lauren. We did a lot of research and brainstorming and decided to create an interactive experience called Social Connections on Tik Tok.

Background

Problem

With social media being easily accessible to young kids, it’s important to educate them on the digital footprint they will make and their online privacy.

Process

Our team discussed many issues relating privacy on social media. We didn’t want our experience to just be negative so we also included the digital footprint they will make on social media. We narrowed it down to just Tik Tok because it is such a popular app among young people. first created a mood board to decide on a theme. Our final mood board consisted of the Tik Tok color palette, a neon, galaxy-type theme, and some fun icons to show the different types of communities on Tik Tok.

Medium Fidelity

Medium Fidelity Wireframe

Our medium fidelity wireframe shows a title page, a main page that shows both the communities on Tik Tok, and a privacy section. The user has the ability to look at insights on a simulated user profile such as views, likes, and comments. They also have the ability to look at different Tik Tok communities and categories.

High Fidelity

High Fidelity Mockup

In the mockup, users have the ability to view all of the users who have viewed their profile in the last 30 days. They also have the option to click on a map to see where these users are located. When viewing the discovery section, the user will be able to interact with different categories. When they click on a category, such as “Dance,” they will be able too see how many other Tik Tok users are also interested in the “Dance” category.

The Solution

The final solution is a little more detailed than the mockup and includes an “info” icon next to the discovery and privacy sections. In these sections, the user can learn more about what the discovery and privacy section are on Tik Tok. It also includes an option at the start and end of the simulation to make their account private. The user can choose either “YES” or “NO”. By the end of the simulation, the user should have more knowledge on the their digital footprint and different communities on social media.
