Date Night
role
UX Designer
Concept Statements, User Needs Statements, User Flows, Mood Boards, Wireframing, Prototyping
September 2022 – December 2022
Overview
I took a course through MSU called Interaction Design. Our main objective was to use Figma to create concept statements, user needs statements, user task flows, mood boards, wireframes, and prototypes for digital applications.
My goal for this project was to create a bingo game for mobile devices. I would then need to decide on a theme and which user group I would be targeting. I thought about how couples always spend a lot of time trying to decide and plan activities for dates. I wanted to make it easier and quicker for couples to do this, so I decided to create a prototype for an app called Date Night.
Background
I’ve grown so much during my time in my interaction design course, some key achievements of which I have listed below:
Proficient in using Figma. By using Figma once a week in class and outside of class a few days a week, I was able to become very comfortable in using its features and plugins.
Discovered strengths as a designer. By identifying my strengths, I was able to utilize them in my project.
Established a design theme. This helped to maintain the look and feel of the overall product.
Process
problem
Many people struggle to think of ideas for activities. Couples who like to plan things for date nights need ideas written out for them so they don’t have to think for a long time about making plans. If interested, couples can play Date Night and discover new activities for the night and/ or day. This will make it easier for people in relationships to make the most out of their time and have fun.
design process
The process for Date Night was focused on using many visual elements. I aimed to incorporate concept statements, user needs statements, user flows, mood boards, wireframing, and prototyping in all parts of my project.
Gathering Insights
brainstorming
I created many concept statements and decided on a mobile application for couples. My user needs statement targeted people in romantic relationships. I made a user task flow to brainstorm what kind of information I wanted on my app and what features I wanted my users to interact with.
Concept Statement
Theme
Next, it was time to decide on a theme. I created a mood board that was centered around love, pinks and reds, and romantic aspects. With this theme in mind, I made a lo-fi and med-fi wireframe. I wanted users to understand that they were still playing a game of bingo, but in order to keep playing and not get bored, I included a rewards page so that they could unlock new themed bingo boards.
The Solution
Redesign
After gaining constructive criticism from my peers, I decided that the romantic theme was too focused around love. Because I wanted to include other themed bingo boards instead of just a “first date” theme, I decided to make the theme a little more neutral.
Prototype
The final product was a prototype for an application called Date Night Bingo. The user would first be able to decide whether or not they wanted to continue a game they left off on or start a new game. Next, they would be able to choose a theme that they have already unlocked. Once the theme is picked, the objective is for the users to complete three activities to get a bingo. To check off an activity, the group must upload a picture of some aspect of the activity. Once the players have completed three activities, they will get a bingo and win a reward. The reward will be unlocking a themed bingo board that was locked before.
